The NEED to know’s of painting
Volatile Organic Compound
Coverage and Sq. Ft.
Mostly found in oil-based paints, VOC’s are the chemicals that keep it from turning solid in the can. You smell these when painting because they are off-gassing into the air as the paint dries. *short-term exposure can cause headaches/eye & lung irritation. Limit your v.o.c’s with ZEROvoc paints or use proper face masks.
The average can of paint will cover 350-400 square feet of wall/ceiling surface. When calculating for coverage remember to subtract doors & windows. Also, if you are using a paint sprayer, because of the overlapping technique you will use more paint in the long run.
Paint Product Overload
How much paint?
Quality Paint
When stuck in the isle looking at so many options of paint. You can start by checking the paint company’s MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet). Check for the % of Titanium added. Titanium is a pigment added for coverage, the higher the %, means fewer coats of paint needed. The cheaper pigments are less effective, lower quality AND quantity of the paint overall. It is this that differentiates one product from another as well as the sheen. The SHEEN of the paint is how shiny or flat it is, in reality, how much light will be reflected off of the paint. This too is controlled by the quality and quantity of the additives in the paint.
One word, QUALITY. When it comes to the famous question of, “WHY IS IT SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE?!”
The main difference between the $50/can and the $100/can is simply the quality of the materials that are added into the paint. Pigments in a HIGH-QUALITY brand make up about 70% of paint, these are finely ground materials added into the paint at the factory. The lower quality brands are composed of approximately 30% of these pigments. You can literally FEEL the difference, good quality additives make the paint heavier.
